The Face Shop Tonic Toner

Sample Selection Saturday | The Face Shop The Therapy Essential Tonic Treatment

The Face Shop Tonic Toner

Recently The Face Shop launched a new line called “The Therapy”: an anti-aging line that harnesses the beauty of 200-year-old European alchemy. I received a couple samples of the line–including serum and emulsion–and I’m super psyched to mention a fairly new sample!

What is it?

The whole line is based on an old time pharmacy feel, where things are crafted by skilled artisans/scientists for the very best skin. That’s the idea anyway. The special ingredients from the line all come from a hilly region of Italy (Marches).

But back to the tonic. I mean toner.

Ingredients: water, propanediol, PEG/PPG-17/6 copolymer, glycerth-26, dipropylene glycol, betaine, methyl gluceth-20, glycerin, 1,2-hexanediol, panthenol, butylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, carbomer, disodium EDTA, potassium hydroxide, adenosine, polyquaternium-51, glyceryl polymethacrylate, sodium hyaluronate, honey extract, theobroma cacao (cocoa) extract, avena sativa (oat) meal extract, ethylhexylglycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, calendula officinalis flower extract, laurus nobilis leaf extract, mela azadirachta leaf extract, melia azadirachta flower extract, curcuma longa (turmeric) root extract, ocimum sanctum leaf extract, corallina officinalis extract, diethylhexyl syringylidenemalonate, fragrance

In brief: the good and the ugly

The Good:

OK. I kind of really love this packaging. It has that old-timey apothecary feel to it that makes me feel super hipster or whatever. The idea behind this is to harken back to the history that is artisanal skin care and The Therapy’s handcrafted blending system.

Even the use of tonic! I love that commitment to the brand identity.

This is a really substantial toner. If the serum feels more like a gel, this toner feels more like a serum would. It’s still watery, but has more of a form and is not runny in the least. This would be a good toner for mature skin types, dry skin types and for me–during late fall and winter.

The Ugly:

The smell is herbal and earthy like a spring garden. It’s nice but it’s kind of too much. At the risk of TMI, strong smells make me nauseous in the morning. It fades quickly after application, but that might be a dealbreaker.

Would I purchase?

Maybe.

The Therapy Essential Tonic Treatment (150ml, $35 CDN plus tax) can be found at various The Face Shop locations.
